Our baby boy has finally arrived! We are so excited to announce that Bowen Matthew Hammitt was delivered tonight, September 9, 2010 at 7:59pm at the University of Michigan Women’s Hospital. He weighs 7 lbs, 7 oz and is far more handsome than we had ever imagined!
We weren’t sure if we’d be able to hold him tonight, but our OBGYN and the nurses in the PCTU were kind enough to give us a few minutes with him before they sent him to undergo several hours of testing. Once they finish all of his tests, they will give us an update on his heart and overall health. We will continue to update our blog regularly so our friends and family can pray for baby Bowen and follow his story as it unfolds.
Overwhelmed with joy at the birth of our son,
Matt and Sarah

God is good! I just found your blog this evening and I’ve been hitting refresh for hours! It’s so amazing to see how your precious little boy has touched so many hearts and lives before he was even born. Just imagine what God has in store for him now that he’s actually here! Only a truly awesome God can do that. Praying for your family and rejoicing with you tonight. What an amazing God we serve.

I just heard about Bowen this morning on Air1. You all were immediately in my prayers — I have a 13 yo son, who was born with a congeital heart defect. He had surgery at 4 days old to fix his heart — he had transposition of the great vessels. He is fine now & I know God used that to time teach me some things. Little Bowen & the rest of your family will continue to be in my thoughts & prayers!

You all have been on my mind as this time has been approaching. As I heard your story for the first time from you Matt on KLove. I too heard the news as Kelly talked on the radio and you texted her about being in labor. My heart is truly heavy for you and pray for the best outcome possible. I am so glad you got to hold him for awhile. That is a treasured moment!! He is in Gods hands and as difficult as the uncertainty is may you have some peace knowing our God is in control and he is holding you tight right now!!
Bless you! Thank you for the updates we all appreciate it.

Matt & Sarah,
We are so excited that Bowen has arrived. We are praising God that he is doing okay so far and we are praying fro God’s grace and healing hands to be upon him over the coming weeks.
We are also VERY excited that Bowen is sharing a birthday with our guy, Tucker, in addition to being HLHS/heart buddies!
There will be some difficult and stressful times over the next few weeks, but know that God will provide for your every need and that he will put his perfect plan into motion for Bowen’s life. Bowen is only a few hours old and he has already touched the lives of others!
Please let us know if you guys have any questions, concerns, or just need to vent about things that are going on…we are always available!
Happy Birthday to Bowen and Tucker!

First and foremost, Congratulations!! God bless you guys and your babies…when my daughter was born the doctors told us, after her newborn testing, that she had findings of Cystic Fibrosis. We felt our heart stop. We didn’t understand why God had given us such a beautiful gift and why she was sick. We prayed for hours that day. After second testing, they found that there had been an error!! After going to see a pulmonologist and a geneticist, we thanked our Lord. we learned to be still, and above all to trust in him!! So I know that the Lord has special plans for baby Bowen!! God bless you!! And know that my family and I here in El Paso, Texas are praying for you!!

Thank God. You guy’s have been on my heart so much. Last night I put my son to bed. He didn’t want to go. He turns two in Oct. So I cracked the door, grabbed a stool and sat with him in the dark until he fell asleep. In the quiet darkness I felt God say,” I’m here we can talk.” It was a little after 8p.m. My sons name is Bowen also. I prayed for your Bowen then I prayed for mine. Remember we serve a HUGE God and He can do anything. We will keep you in our prayers.

A Newborn ‘ s Conversation with God
A baby asked God, “They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow,
but how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?”
God said, “Your angel will be waiting for you and will take care of you.”
The child further inquired, “But tell me, here in heaven I don ‘ t have
to do anything but sing and smile to be happy.”
God said, “Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you.
And you will feel your angel ‘ s love and be very happy.”
Again the small child asked, “And how am I going to be able to understand
when people talk to me if I don ‘ t know the language?”
God said, “Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words
you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will
teach you how to speak.”
“And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?”
God said, “Your angel will place your hands together and will teach
you how to pray.”
“Who will protect me?”
God said, “Your angel will defend you even if it means risking its life.”
“But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore.”
God said, “Your angel will always talk to you about Me and will teach
you the way to come back to Me, even though I will always be next to you.”
At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices from Earth
could be heard and the child hurriedly asked, “God, if I am to leave
now, please tell me my angel ‘ s name.”
God said, You will simply call her, “Mom.”
Love in Christ!!

Congratulations on Bowen’s arrival! I heard about it on 106.9 The Light this morning.
I have a four month-old named Grant. He is the love of my life! I work at a Christian school, and we will be praising Jesus this morning for Bowen’s safe arrival. We are also praying for Bowen’s health as he grows physically and spiritually. One thing that was impressed upon me during my pregnancy and still is-our babies belong to God. He has been kind enough to let us love them and take care of them. Bowen is in His hands.

Congratualations on the arrival of Bowen! While exciting I know that these next few weeks will be quite scary. My daughter (youngest of 3) Faith just celebrated her 1st birthday on 9/3, she has HLHS, and we were unaware of her condition until she was just over a week old when she had to be rushed to the hospital. Nothing I can say could prepare you for what you are about to endure over the next weeks and months, but God will see you through this. I never prayed as much as I should in the past, but when Faith went for her first surgery I prayed to God and just said “I give her to you and I trust that you will bring her back to me , my wife and her brother and sister, for we have just met her and we know she has a special place in life.” See I didn’t like the name Faith, but my wife was set on it and I reluctantly gave in and she couldn’t have picked a more perfect name! We ended up with people all over the country praying for her and it worked, you wouldn’t know by looking at her that there was anything wrong with her at all she is full of smiles and getting ready to start walking. So with all of the prayers you will be receiving I believe Bowen will be joining a band and asking Mom and Dad for tips on how to make it on the road before you even know it.

Such wonderful news!!! So glad Bowen Matthew is finally here!! You all are in my/our prayers! Reminds me so much of the birth of my son, Samuel, who also had Hypoplastic Left Heart! My husband and I also were able to hold him before he was taken away for tests. My family, along with Samuel, who is now soon to be 16, has been following your family and Bowen’s arrival! Although the condition of Samuel’s heart was not healthy enough to have the Norwood surgeries, he was given a new heart, 7 days after birth. He too is a true blessing and miracle from God! Keep trusting and placing Bowen in the hands of God and know he is in the best place ever!! Love and prayers will continue to cover you! ~Theresa

I am the grandmother of a child diagnosed with HLHS while in utero. Praise God she is now two years old living a very healthy, active life. She plays, sings, wrestles, runs and loves. I KNOW God heals. I BELIEVE and have witnessed His touch with my own eyes.
While anxiously waiting her arrival on the day she was born I read this verse in my quiet time – “My own hand laid the foundations of the earth, and my right hand spread out the heavens’, when I summon them, they all stand up together.” Isa 48:13. That is POWER. What did I have to fear when I believe in everything He said he was able to do? There is no greater power. Praise His name!!!!

Congratulations on Bowen’s birth! I can imagine the roller coaster of emotions you are on now with the uncertainty of these coming months. You are in wonderful hands, first with our Creator & second the staff of UofM’s Congenital Heart Center, Dr. Bove & PCTU. They are fabulous doctors, nurses & people.
May God bless you all as you embarque on this journey in the world of CHD’s. May he give you strength to endure & peace in knowing that He is ultimately in control! Praying for you!

Congratulations to you and your family. I’m so glad that Bowen is here and you are able to touch…. hold…. kiss his every being. I know first hand what kind of trials your little guy will endure. I was born with what was considered a serious and rare heart defect back in 1966. My chances of survival were slim… God had other plans
and with God on our side we are fighters! I’m married 19 years and have 3 boys! God is a God of miracles. Your strength and your faith in our Awesome God is so inspiring. My family and i will be praying for little Bowen and for your precious family.

I am praying for complete healing of little Bowen’s heart, as well as strength and peace for you two and the girls. Your latest song Lead Me has done so much for me lately, I really want to thank you and lift you all up. God bless you all!

Welcome to this world baby Bowen!!!! Though your start may be a bit bumpy, the Gilbert family is praying that you will be as strong as our HLHS son and one day do things that the doctors said you may not be able to do! Monday will be EXTREMELY hard for your family—you get to sleep and will have no memory of the seriousness of that day but know that Jesus is directing the hands of Dr. Bove and all the nurses and doctors that will be in the operating room! Prayers will get your family through the long wait in the wailting—and we look forward to the praise report that your family will post!! You have many heart buddies and someday you will have the chance to pray for another child that will be going through the same thing you have—–we have been there and know how each one of you feel! Praying for a sucessful Norwood procedure and a miraculous recovery!!!

Almost 3 years ago, my son was born with HLHS and a very dangerous complication, an intact atrial septum. He has undergone 5 open heart surgeries, 6 heart caths, GI surgery, brain surgery, a thoracotomy and a tracheostomy, and 2 cardiac arrests, the latest which has left with with a very profound brain injury. When your son is more stable, please use your notoriety to advocate for congenital heart disease. Someone well known needs to speak out for our children and give them a voice! People need to know that our children suffer and that we need more research and funding. God bless!

I have been praying for you as klove brought it up, but I had not been following closely. I went to the website and found that Bowen was born on my birthday. He was also born a year after I found out my son had died in my womb at 24 weeks. He was born that day and was named Matthew. I now feel a strange connection with you and your pain, and will pray ever more deeply and fervently. My matthew’s middle name is Asaia, which in hebrew means “God did it” seemed slightly humorous and true in our painful situation. perhaps it does for you as well

I’m so happy for you and your family, I have just begun reading about your journey with Bowen. What a blessing you have been given. One of my best friends has a baby with Dilated Cardiomyopathy and he had his heart ‘fixed’ (transplant) on 9-9-09, so he just had his heart birthday when your Bowen was born!!! I will continue to pray for Bowen and your family and you will always be in my thoughts.

What an awesome tesitomy your entire family will have to share one day with others. Little Bowen and I share the same birthday. As a matter of fact within hours of each other. I have two of my own little miracles. We were told we would never have children. Our daughter, we were told would have club foot and a hole in her heart. Her we are 5 years later and she is as perfect as anyone would want. God healed her. She was born without either. My faith was tested a lot over the 3 years we attempted to have any children, but because of that I can reach out to others facing similar situations. Thank you for sharing your wonderful story with all of us.

Father,
We thank You for being our God and Lord. We thank You for Jesus Christ our Savior and Redeemer. And we thank You for the Holy Spirit who tells us what to do. We are beliving now for Your hand to be upon Bowen. In Jesus name heal him, and restore him to a full recovery. And Father, comfort Bowen’s mother and father and give them strength as they care for Bowen.
AMEN

I’ve heard a lot about Bowen through KLove and felt led to come to your webpage today. My daughter Mollie was born just days before Bowen- on September 3, 2010, and has CHD. I’m encouraged by all that I’ve read today. CHD is very difficult and yet so strengthening. Praise God for all that He’s done and doing in Bowen’s and Mollie’s lives.
