I’ve been wanting to write a guest blog post for a while now, and since Matt and Sarah are super busy these days with Winter Jam, Whole Hearts, and three kids, now is my perfect chance! Although things have been very busy, Bowen has been doing great! He is very active, which is an excellent sign that his heart is ok for now. He’s eating fair and doesn’t have the gagging problem at all anymore! Yay! He just gets right in there and plays and dances with his sisters. He is starting to talk some too. My favorite thing he says is “Dada lalala” and he moves is little head like he’s singing when he says “lalala”. We are just so thankful and blessed to live so close and be able to see our grandchildren as much as we do.
Sarah has been able to do a little traveling with Matt recently. They both went to Florida in January for the first Whole Hearts Foundation fundraiser. Then they took the girls on the bus to four cities on the tour. They LOVE going on the bus with Daddy!!! They will have such great memories of those trips, too. Bowen stayed with us part of the time and his other Grandma and Papa part of the time. I think he got pretty spoiled getting all those Grandmas and Papas to himself! We took him to the mall to ride the train one of the days and forgot to bring cash. All we had was a credit card for a three dollar ride and they only took cash. We were so disappointed because the main reason we went was to ride the train. But then a good samaritan woman paid it for us. As we talked, I found out she worked for a cardiologist. I think that was a divine appointment! We thoroughly enjoyed having him show off for us the whole weekend!
I just want to personally thank everyone so much for praying for Bowen and all the wonderful comments and encouraging things you say on this blog. I can’t imagine what it would have been like not having it this past year and a half. Please know that we read all the comments and are praying for you too. I look forward to it every day. I also want to thank you for how you encourage and pray for others who express needs too. It’s so wonderful to see. Just know that when a lot of time goes by that no news is probably good news. You can be sure that if Bowen was in need we would be sure to let you “prayer warriors” know. Paul wrote this to the Thessalonians, but the words seem fitting for all of you too.
We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers. We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor promoted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
1Thessalonians 1:2-3
May God bless each and every one of you,
Pam Schooler (aka, Grammy Pammy)

Excellent guest post, Grammy!!! I know that it must bring so much joy to your heart that Bowen is doing so well! Bowen has a special place in our hearts as my precious niece, Azaria had HLH. This was back in the day when not much could be done, so she has been rejoicing with the angels after 2 wonderful months on earth. Our hearts leap with joy at every wonderful report about Bowen!

Thanks for your comment about Bowen having a special place in your heart after losing your neice. I also lost a 10 week old granddaughter 3 years ago to a heart condition and this blog about Bowen has been one of the most helpful things. I have learned so much from the Hammitts. Words cannot express how much this blog has helped me in every aspect of my life. So much wisdom in such a young couple….they inspire me.

This blog truly has been amazing….I have found a lot of healing from losing my baby brother from HLHS years ago. He was the only one I knew of who had this heart defect until I discovered the Hammit famiy. I had no idea it was such a common birth defect. My mom still has dreams about seeing him in Heaven one day. She always pictures him dancing and smiling and she says he has really curly, strawberry blond hair. I am so thankful for what the doctors are able to do these days .I have learned so much in so many different ways! There will always be a special place in my heart for all these little heart warriors and heart angels!

Thank you for the post “Grammy Pammy!” You made me get excited to be a grammy in the next couple of months. It seems a little awkward that I’ll be a grammy at only 42, but I guess that’s what can happen if you get married at 18 and have a baby when you’re barely 20! And our daughter’s husband is a blessing and we can tell he just cherishes her! It will be fun watching our little 5 year old(actually, she’ll be barely 6!) be an aunt! The first thing she said when we told her she was going to be an aunt was,”But I don’t want to turn into an ant!”
And for the bibe verse too! Love to you all
That is so precious that Bowen says, “Dada…lalala!” What a cutie pie! He’s got a smile like Sarah and eyes like Matt. I heard he’s walking too! Yay! Go Bowen! You are doing so good! And what fun for Sarah and the girls to get to go touring with Matt! Special memories are great! Mandi made a valentine for Bowen. He’ll probably get it late, cuz I haven’t mailed it yet, but I’ll try to get it sent tomorrow! Thank you so much for the post

Wow , Susie ! How cool. Such a young Grammy!! I’d have loved that too. Our oldest son is 30 and I had him when I was 20. It could have been……….. but , does anyone have a girl-friend for him?!!!
Graeme , our youngest, was 12 when Laura was born, so it’s still a nice playful age. Your little girl will be a special little aunt!
Hope everything goes well with the little one on the way. It’s a wonderful thing. Our oldest daughter, Alicia (25) has Laura (2 1/2) and Ella (7mths) and it’s so special to see your own daughter blossom into mother-hood, and then be that special one in your grand-child’s life (not that no-one else is special , of course!)
And such a young little ant-y
Enjoy!!!

Oh my goodness…could Bowen be any cuter!!!!! He is getting so big and looking so fantastic! He is so stinkin’ cute! I am sure you loved your time with just him and what a special thing for him to have his grandparents all to himself! The story of the good samaritan who paid for the train brought tears to my eyes! Praising God that Bowen is doing so well and praying things continue to go great! Love and prayers to your beautiful family!

Thanks “Grammy Pammy” for the update! And may I say, what a cool name your grandchildren have for you.
Bowen looks so good and I’m so glad that you were able to have some “one-on-one” time with him. It is also awesome to hear that Sarah and the girls have been able to spend some time with Matt as he has been traveling. You are correct when you say this will be wonderful memories for them some day.
Thanks for sharing the train story! I just love how God has his divine appointments for us that we aren’t aware of until they happen.
May God continue to bless the family. We continue to pray for Bowen and all of you.

I saw Matt and Sarah and the girls at Winter Jam in Cleveland. I wondered where Bowen was; now I know he was getting spoiled by Grandparents! WOW! What fun!!! I’m so glad you got some time to enjoy your little miracle and the girls got a chance to spend time with their parents on the road. What a blessing!
Thanks so much for the update. I really enjoy knowing how the little guy is doing. My “lil man” is not so little anymore! He’s 13, nearly as tall as me, and healthy as an ox! Who knew he’d be this healthy?! Well… I guess God knew.
God bless you, Grammy Pammy! Prayers for the Hammitts safe travels.

Great post, Pam! We continue to pray for Bowen and feel an extra special connection to him because of all the years we spent with Gloria – sitting behind her in church and swimming at her pool. They are an amazing little family that you can be so proud of! We are also big Sanctus Real fans:) I still think “All of Me” is the best song ever! Sarah & Matt are really blessed to have grandparents so close by. Actually, you are all blessed, because I know you enjoy it as much as they appreciate it! May Bowen continue to exceed Drs. expectations and live an amazing, healthy life that continues to be full of love and joy!

Grammy,
Thank you for the update and for being a wonderful grammy. I have 4 children and my oldest has spina bifida. She has had 5 surgeries and spent more than her fair share of time at doctors appointments. My youngest is just 8 weeks old. HE was premature and spent some time i(including Christmas) in the NICU. Having children with special medical needs, I know firsthand how important grandparents are! We are also blessed to have 4 very involved grandparents who are always there to help when the special medical needs get overwhelming. Watching the other children when we are at the hospital is such a blessing. I just wanted you to know how much you are needed and appreciated from another special needs mom.

My daughter Alexya Kaydence, was born at 23 weeks 0 days. She was 1lb 5oz when she was born. They gave her an hour to live, if that. She is now 2months old. This is her story, we did IVF (in vitro fertilization) to get pregnant with her. I had 6 embryos, they placed two inside me and out of all of them she was the only one who made it. At 7 weeks complications arose, I started bleeding.. but she survived that. At 15 weeks I was admitted into the hospital, I was bleeding so badly that I had to have a blood transfusion. At that time they told me it’s a miracle your baby is still alive. At 22 week I was admitted again, we were hoping for the long hall but just a week after I was admitted I went into labor and there was no stopping it. They told me to have my daughter and hold her while she passes because she will not survive. I could not do that I opted for a C-section so that I could give her a chance at life, they told me she will be born alive we can guarantee that that she won’t make it an hour to see you out of surgery. I made it out of surgery and our little princess was alive and fighting… at 4 days they told us she has suffered from a bilateral brain bleed, a 4 on one side and a 2 on the other, again they told me I should remove support because she would possibly have brain damage. But we did research, and research shows that the younger a baby is the better possibility they have at remapping their brain… so we continued support; she was feeding, breathing, eating well. Then about a week ago she started having complications. They said she contracted NEC, and intestinal infection. That she most likely would not survive.. the did surgery and thank God none of her intestines were dead , they only had to remove a small part of her large intestines and half of her colon. They said her chances of surviving this were not good. But she is still here and if fighting for her life. Again a doctor came in and told my husband and I that we should remove her support because she will have no quality of life because of everything that has been stacked up against her. But if I’m honest she is the strongest person I’ve ever know, she has so much fight in her. I believe in my heart that she is fighter for a reason; God had been protecting her and watching over her since day one. She is amazing and has so much life and spunk and she is only 2 months old weighing 3lbs 10oz. As long as God continues to give my baby girl the fight to live I’m going to fight with her. Please pray for my daughter, I just want to say your song All of me has helped me tremendously through this time in our lives.

I am glad to hear your story. I was looking through the comments. My son has had some problems as well. It is nice to find people who don’t have abortions just because something is wrong or because the doctors say too and don’t give up. My sister just buried her youngest son today. He had anencephaly which is where the skull is open and the brain doesn’t totally develop. The high doctors office hadn’t had anyone to carry a baby to full-term. He lived for 8 hrs and dies on wednesday.

Hi, I am glad to hear he is doing well. Matt’s song “All of Me” has a special place in my heart. My son, Logan, is 7 yrs old and he was born with congenital heart defects and congenital scoliosis. He had a balloon catheter done when he was 1 1/2 months old to fix his pulmonary valve. In 2010, he had open heart surgery to remove a blockage. In Dec, he has a veptr (rod) put in his back and has to have it adjusted every 4 -6 months for around 5 yrs. We see the cardiologist and orthopedic in march. This past october, the doctor told us the blockage is growing back and he will need more surgery in the next year or two. He is doing really good right now. I am planning on attending WinterJam on March 2nd in Memphis and I might bring both of my kids with me. I am hoping to hear All of Me when they come and to meet matt.

Oh my….he is absolutely adorable!!! My daughter, Abby, and I love to look at the new pictures of Baby Bowen together (that’s what we still call him!). I am so very happy that he is doing well! It’s just so awesome! I shared in a previous post that we walked a very similar path as you guys did. Abby had open heart surgery at four days old. My husband was sharing this story with someone just the other day, as it marked the 8th year anniversary. It was Valentine’s Day and she was less than 24 hours removed from open heart surgery. We arrived early at the hospital that morning, from a sleepless night at the Ronald McDonald House, and as my husband walked through the doors of the ICU he heard the siren going off, indicating someone had coded. There was a lot of commotion with nurses running frantically and suddenly he heard them say, “Doctor…it’s in here…it’s Abby.” As he felt his body go limp, he heard the nurse say, “get dad out”. As we collapsed to our knees, all we could do was cry out for God’s help. It was a Saturday and her heart surgeon was scheduled to be off that day, but it had snowed so he was unable to take his regular morning jog so he decided to come into the hospital. He was able to perform CPR directly on her heart because her chest was still open and then placed her on ECMO. What a miracle it was that he was at the hospital that day. God had his loving arms wrapped around her! Abby would then take two steps forward and one step back until finally at seven weeks old, we got to bring her home! She is now eight years old and you would never guess that she had been sick. She is so full of life!!!
As I read your previous post, it reminded me of some similar days we’ve experienced. Abby was terrified of anyone in a white coat. She would become hysterical and literally make herself sick. I really did not realize how many professionals wore them. Once we were at the grocery store and the person from the meat department walked by, in his white coat, and she got so hysterical that she literally got sick. Another time we were in a department store and walked past the makeup counter, and the salesperson was standing there in her white coat, once again, it was very traumatic. I want to offer you hope though, because it does get better. People would tell us this too and we just couldn’t even image it because each doctor’s appointment or encounter with a white coat was so traumatic. We recently had her annual cardiology appointment and she climbed up on the table and talked and laughed with the nurse the whole time as she had her procedures!
Abby’s teacher ask me last year if Baby Bowen was someone in our family. I explained to her that we heard of his situation on KLove and pray for him daily. She said that Abby talked about him all the time and on the day of his heart surgery, Abby came in that morning and ask if the class could have prayer for him. She is in public school so unfortunately prayer time is not allowed but her loving teacher let her lead a prayer with her classmates for your sweet baby boy!
Please know that we are still praying for him and for each of you and are so thankful for your precious little miracle!!!

Thank the Lord, that Baby Bowen is doing Great! I love him so…being a mother of 5, i find myself-always- putting myself the place of other mother’s liviing certain experiences. I’ve followed this blog and the Faith and Love Matt and Sarah have for the Lord is so inspiring. If I”m having a difficult time, I turn to this blog because it helps me to remember that if I think I have it tough, my momentary issues are nothing compared to what your family has faced with Bowen. And so, it snaps me back in place and reminds me that no matter what I may face, that God is with me…that difficult moment is serving some purpose in my life–i may not understand it at the moment, but I need to Trust the Lord. Prayers for you always and know that baby Bowen has a special place in my heart!! God Bless! Sharon

I had previously posted on here about my son Logan. We found out around the time of my last post that he had a loose screw in his back. We had thought that he might have to have surgery the day of the Winterjam concert. He had his surgery to correct it yesterday at Lebonheur in Memphis. We are still here, hopefully going home tomorrow. The doctor put in a bigger screw and a hook. We are waiting on a soft brace for his back. His doctor wasn’t expecting him to be so active. He has had a heart cath, open heart surgery, pe tubes in his ears, and now 2 back surgeries. He is usually happy boy and he is definitely a fighter. We found out on March 6th that he will have to have open heart surgery by the end of this year. He will probaly have it this summer, which for him works best due to school, colds, and veptr adjustments. He was supposed to be having his veptr rod adjusted this summer, but God knew what he was doing by allowing Logan’s screw to come loose. His doctor gave him an adjustment while he was in there yesterday. Now with this revision, he will come back in 6 months for another adjustment which will be around september. That will give him enough time for recuperation from heart surgery.

I was able to go to the concert, but was really disappointed to not get to see Matt after the concert. I had helped pass out info for Holt and had to turn it in after intermission and had to try to find a spot to sit so I also missed most of his band singing. I was hoping to get his cd while there but they weren’t selling it. I am glad Bowen is doing good. I pray that it continues that way.

Hi from Belgium here Pam!
Great to hear from you. And I’m so glad you’re getting to enjoy those grand-babies so much. I too am thrilled about our 2 little grand-daughters being real close. They even go to our church! It’s so special to look down and see a little girl who wants to sit on Mimi’s lap! ( Laura’s 2 1/2) I love it. See me beaming !! We Grammys are special , aren’t we?
It’s been AGES since I checked in and am always thankful when there’s no news
Bowen is SO handsome. And the picture with you is so cute. Haven’t seen the girls for a while but they’ll be real little ladies.
It’s hard to believe it’ll be a year ago on April 4th that Graeme had his brain-tumor removed!! He’s doing great. He has 6-monthly MRI scans and the last in Jan. was all clear. You were an encouragement to me at that time. Thank you.
And God bless. X

Thanks for the update Pam. Being a grandmother of a medically fragile child I can really relate to you. I use hearing Sanctus Real songs on the radio as a reminder to pray for Bowen. I am so happy to hear that he is doing well.
I would ask that you and your family pray for another heart family. Natalie writes at http://landonsletters.blogspot.com/ about the upcoming birth of Landon. Landon is missing valves in his heart and will undergo surgery to begin reconstruction a few days after he is born. Natalie was hoping to carry Landon until 39 weeks to give him the best chance of survival, but that doesn’t look possible at this point. Natalie and her husband are faithful believers and are trusting the hand of God in this situation, but you know what it is like for this family. So if you would join me in prayer for Landon and his family, I would really appreciate it.
I don’t know them personally. They grew up in the church of a friend of mine from high school, and Susan wrote to ask that I put them on any prayer list that I have access too. We believe in the power of prayer. I believe that it was strong prayer warriors that petitioned the Father that secured the safety of my son through 4 tours in Iraq. To us, it is petition of the Father that will give Landon the best chance to join his parents here on earth.
Thank you,
Lisa

I am a Pediatric Nursing Professor in Bakersfield, California. I heard about Bowen, and the Bowen’s Heart blog on my local Christian radio station. I had a friend who’s baby had been diagnosed with HLHS inutero, but ended up with a left ventricle that functioned well enough to avoid the Norwood procedure. I was there with them at the hospital during that time, and was moved by God’s goodness.
I teach the pediatric cardiac content of our curriculum, and have added a hyperlink to bowensheart.com in my lecture. So many of our students need real life situations to apply to what they are learning, and what an AWESOME opportunity for me to use my platform as a professor, and Matt and Sarah’s openness about Bowen, to witness to my students.
Thank you so much for sharing. I was reading a 2-year old post, and it stated that Bowen’s heart would become bigger than they could know……and it has!!
