I hope your summer is off to a great start! Things have been extremely busy for us, as usual. Sarah’s been working hard to keep things in order around the house, while I’ve been working hard to meet songwriting deadlines for the new Sanctus Real album. A few other little things like, well, our bus burning down, have added some spice to our life, but Sarah and I are doing our best to soak in as much sun and swimming with the kids as we possibly can.
We’ve wanted so badly to blog, but it’s been hard to catch up on everything that needs to get done these days. As you know, Sarah’s mom loves checking in on Bowen’s heart, and she wants updates as much as anyone else. One of the perks of being Bowen’s Grammy is that she can just say, “We’ve waited long enough, here’s an update for everyone!” As always, we’re grateful for her help. So here’s an update from Grammy Pammy…
____________
Well, it’s been a while and I’m probably not the one you want to be hearing from. Things at the Hammitt household have been very busy, so I thought I would catch everybody up on what’s been happening! If you haven’t already heard, there will be another little boy running around here! We were all very excited to hear they were having a little boy, because it will be so nice for Bowen to have a brother, and it will even things out…two boys and two girls. Like Claire says, “now everyone will have a dance partner”. Sarah just had an echocardiogram yesterday to check his heart, since he is at a higher risk for a heart defect. So far he looks perfectly healthy! Sarah seems to be feeling pretty good with this pregnancy as well, except for maybe a few more headaches than normal.
Speaking of Sarah, I am so proud of her!!! She was asked to speak at a women’s conference in our area and, although she is a person who is easy to talk to and friendly, public speaking is something she has NEVER done or EVER expected to do. She was extremely nervous about doing it, but felt it was something she was supposed to do, and she did a wonderful job! I’m not just saying that because I’m her mom either. I really felt God speaking through her words and I could tell He was giving her His peace through it. Afterwards they had a question and answer time. Bowen came on stage but as soon as he looked out toward the audience he saw me, his Grandma Gail, and his Aunt Hannah. What were the chances of picking us out of a crowd of a thousand people? He immediately wanted down to see us, so we let him sit with us while Sarah finished answering some questions.
You may have heard about another event that happened in Matt and Sarah’s lives lately. A couple weeks ago Matt took Sarah and the girls on the bus to Maryland for a show because it was at a Six Flags theme park. They knew it would be a great fun family time. Mark, Sanctus Real’s drummer, also took his two boys on the trip. On the way home around 3:00 am, while driving on the Pennsylvania turnpike, the bus caught on fire for some unknown reason. The flames started outside the back of the bus where Sarah and the girls were sleeping. Everyone escaped single file out the front of the bus. In the end most of the bus was completely burned including all the beds where everyone was sleeping. I feel like God protected them and that He literally “walked them through the fire” unharmed. The phone call I received at four o’clock in the morning could have been so different, and I praise God every day that He took care of everyone.
It wasn’t a coincidence that our sermon that Sunday was on Psalm 121. Part of that says “The Lord will keep you from all harm – He will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and your going both for now and forevermore.”
As far as Bowen, he is doing really well. However, he did have some kind of rash all over his body this week which they believe was the measles. He is behind in his immunizations because of sickness and his surgery. Sarah checked with the heart doctor and they don’t seem too concerned. Otherwise, he is as busy as can be. He goes swimming in his great grandma Gloria’s heated pool with his sisters and cousins a few times a week and absolutely LOVES it! He is very active and there’s really no stopping him.
The other day after Emmy’s soccer game, he insisted on going to the TOP slide on the jungle gym. After reaching the top, he stood tall and proud in his superman shirt (I was right there behind him of course-it was probably more risky for this old lady than him). Then, after he went down the slide, he had to do it three more times! I was worn out but he seemed fine. It was a very special moment for me because I realized right then and there what a strong spirit God had given him. I really felt He was going to do great in Bowen’s life! He is one special little boy.
We thank you so much for reading this blog and caring so much about Bowie. We know it’s been a while, but things have been going along pretty normal. You can pray for Bowen’s upcoming heart catheterization on July 9th. We will be glad when that is behind us. You can also pray that he would eat a little more; he is eating but he could use a few more pounds and he isn’t always that interested in food. Also, pray for the girls, Mark’s boys, and everyone that was on the bus. That was a scary thing to go through. The girls seem to be handling it ok. Emmy is having the hardest time with losing her favorite blankie that she slept with every night. Claire lost her blankie too, but had a very similar one at home and isn’t as upset about it.
Thank you so much for ALL your prayers for Bowen, and all your prayers for all the other heart babies you’ve heard about on this and other blogs. I’ve met several through here that I follow and pray for always. I just think it is awesome to connect here and see the community God has brought together.
God bless each and every one of you!
Love,
Grammy Pammy

WOW! I am so glad that you all have been enjoying your summer and that Bowen has been doing excellent! I know his next surgery will go very well I know the doctors and nurses will do there very best to help Bowen have a smooth and safe recovery. I know God will has a wonderful life planned ahead for you all and especially for Bowen just like he does for me as well and the other heart babies in this world. I know Mott is the right hospital to have any surgery done I will praying like always do for you all and the girls as well. May God bless you all with this next surgery and with the new baby on the way!

How nice to hear from Bowen again. Thank you so much for the update.
Yay for the new baby boy! Such wonderful news!
I heard about the bus and I was so thankful God saved their lives. A bus can be replaced but lives are too precious …
I’ll be praying for the upcoming heart cath of course.
God bless you all

Yay for an update! All the pictures are wonderful, and I love hearing good news about the new baby.
Grammy Pam, you were the first one I thought of when I heard the girls were on that bus. I can’t imagine what you must have been feeling with that phone call! We are all rejoicing with you that everyone is safe. Charlotte can empathize with Emmy on the blankie. Hers went MIA for a few weeks and I thought we were going to have to strip the house down to studs looking for the thing.
Sarah I am so proud of you for speaking. I know it’s hard, but you have such an amazing story. I am sure that this was just the first of many to come, and I know God will give you the grace you need to share your story.

We have a saying around here “As long nothing is wrong you don’t have to call (write)” With so much normal every day stuff going on we know everything is in God’s hands so just keep on keepin’ on. It is so good to hear about a brother for Bowen and that he is doing so good. That boy is a fighter and in a few more years may want to play football/baseball like there never was anything the matter with him when he was born. Now being physically able to do it will be a different story.
They are so lucky to have the support from various family members so they can get away and grand-mothers to spoil the kids.
When you get the new bus make sure it has all the newest updates and the best engine compartment ever make.

Sitting here relaxing after a long day at work and reading both Grammy Pammy’s blog made my heart swell with such love for this wonderful family. I don’t believe in coincidences, I believe it was God who allow all His children to safety.
It is always good to hear how well Bowen is doing. I am so thankful God has allowed our paths to crosss even if it is just in a blog.
I’ll keep all of you in my prayers (especially for Bowen on July 9th)!
Thank you Grammy Pammy for taking your time to share with all of us!!
Love you bunches!

Hi Hammitts!!! Sounds like you are enjoying summertime
Glad to hear all is going so well. Good job Sarah on talking in front of all those people. I bet you did great! You are such a sweet gal! I like how you guys call your little guy Bowie. That is so cute! Glad to hear he’s having a blast running all over being a little boy. I’ll bet he and his little brother will have so much fun together and be lifelong buddies! I was very saddened to hear about the bus situation, but I am so, so, sooooooooooooo glad everyone is okay. I have grown to hate fire lately, with Colorado burning too. Wyoming doesn’t look much better because the beetles ate tons of it and they’re chopping in down like crazy. I have grown up around mountains most of my life and it is such a heartbreaking thing to see happening. I am sorry to hear about Emmiy and Claire’s blankies. I will pray for little Emmy. I saw a pink toothbrush in one of the fire photos. I hadn’t cried about it til then, but that did it. I’ve been praying for God to quickly provide a bus that would be a blessing for the band. It’s great to hear from you
Have a fantastic summer!
PS. I love being a grammy!!! Little Wyatt is just so incredibly amazing and adorable. He is really easy going and he loves to look around at the world. He is learning to smile now and it’s so precious to watch!

And one more note…Sarah, you inspire me as a momma. You are so sweet and gentle, and Grammy Pammy, you inspire me cuz I want to be a grammy like you (and by the way, your post was wonderful!), and Matt, you have a heart big enough to more than fill up the empty part in Bowen’s, and you inspire me! And I’m not just saying it to be nice because it’s just the truth. That is who you are. Love you all!!!

Thanks SO much for your update and news. I look forward to seeing Bowen’s Heart email in my box.
I LOVED the pictures of you guys. They are so precious.Bowen has really been growing : ) So Handsome and that great smile one can’t help but smile. He will soon be a “big” brother to a little brother. How cool is that!
My prayers go up every day for each and every one of you. I will pray for his upcoming surgery on the 9th and I will add Mark’s girls to my prayer journal. God is always with us and protecting us. I am sorry to hear about the bus. Thank God you are all okay.
And congratulations Sarah on your first public speaking engagement! I can picture that entire event.
Keep us posted.
Love you all!

We know that if you haven’t written lately, that Bowen and family are probably doing well! Praise God! All praise goes to God, too, for rescuing everyone from the bus fire. Praying for transportation for Sanctus Real.
The family looks great and we rejoice how well you are doing! May He continue to be with all of you and with new baby Hammitt.
Have a great rest of summer!

THANK YOU GRAMMY PAMMY!!! I just LOVE getting updates on our sweet boy and his family. I love to hear of God’s work in your lives, and am encouraged in my own faith at the way you guys ALWAYS give all the praise to God. So many people would have used the term “lucky” to describe the outcome of the fire situation, but you acknowledged God’s mighty hand protecting all those involved. Our God is GREAT and greatly to be praised.
We will certainly keep the Hammits and the rest of S.R. and their families in our prayers. I’ll also pray for poor Emmy to find something else for security. It’s SO hard for little sweeties to lose the things they love.
My kids and I will be praying for Bowen, the docs, and the rest of you in anticipation of the heart cath. I’m going to add him to our prayer list at church too. We have been blessed with some SERIOUS prayer warriors. Please let us know when you find out a time, so we can get on our knees and lift up sweet Bowen while the doctors are actually working on him.

Thanks for the update. I will anxiously awaiting to hear how Bowen is doing after July 9th. My prayers are with him and everyone there. It sounds like wonderful and scary at the same time. I pray for Sara’s pregnancy and that all goes well with God’s amazing grace.
Bowen looks so grown up and so cute in his photos. It is always a great pleasure and joy to see how well he is doing and how God is working in such miraculous ways in all of our lives. I have no doubt Bowen is destined for great things!!! He is a very special boy and always will have a very special place in my heart.
Have a Happy summer Hammitt family and don’t forget about us!!!

Thank you so much for the update. I come to the website often looking for more pictures and news! Every time I visit the website I cry. I’m always overcome with joy and excitement for the Hammitt family. You can truly see the Lords grace surrounding them. They are obedient to the Lord and you can feel the love He has for them. I am so in love with that little boy. I wish I could just give him a big hug. Please tell him (and the girls) how much they are loved, but people they don’t even know. You guys are such a blessing to me! I have a daughter who is 7 and a son who is 2… both very healthy. I thank the Lord everyday for them. I can’t imagine how hard it is to love a child so much, and know that they are sick. It’s truly the peace of God. I pray for you Matt and Sarah as parents and husband and wife. Remember the Lord is in control and Satan has NO control over your beautiful family! thank you for sharing your story with us and keeping us involved also. You have many praying for you. Lots of love from Denver!

It is great to hear such wonderful things about Bowen and his progress. He couldn’t be any cuter and knowing he is thriving is a blessing in its self! Praise God for the lives of all the people on that bus when it burned! How frightening that must have been for everyone involved. Thank you as always for sharing your lives with us. I continue to pray for Bowen and your family.

Thanks, Grammy Pammy, for the update. I had heard about the bus fire on KLOVE but didn’t realize the whole family, as well as family members of other band members had been on the bus. God is so good! So thankful that no one was hurt. Kudos to Sarah for sharing her story! I can really empathize with not feeling comfortable with public speaking. So glad to hear that she did it and God used it. He often uses us in places we don’t feel comfortable so we have to depend on Him.
Thanks for updating us on Bowen, the girls, and his soon-to-appear brother. We will bepraying for his heart cath on 7/9. Will this befor his Fontan?
We continue to pray.

Praying for him! Just wanted to also mention, I consider being late on his vaccines a good thing. Some of the products in those are so scary and harmful to little children’s bodies. The worst ingredient I’ve heard of is using aborted fetal tissue in some vaccines. There is no need for something so horrible to be used in a vaccine. I’m sorry to bring this up. Vaccines just scare me so much. God Bless your beautiful family!

I recently found Matt’s music on Spotify and was so touched by the story of Bowen and what you’ ve been through. I bought “Every Falling Tear” and the lyrics SO touch my heart. I went through a similar experience when I was pregnant with my son and the ultrasound showed heart transposition. God lifted me up and gave me such peace the 6 weeks I waited and went through ultrasounds @ 3 different hospitals here in Florida.
He was born ok – No transposition praise God. He is 19 years old now and a Freshman at the University of Central Florida. He did have a brainstem malformation called a Chiari Malformation that he needed brain surgery when he was 15. God was so gracious that we discovered this malformation when he was 5 and had a seizure and resultant MRI. His epilepsy was the kind he outgrew by the time he was 13. Without having that MRI at 5 we wouldn’t have known about the Chiari since the symptoms are so different for each person. GOD IS SO GOOD! Thank you for your wonderful God inspired music! It helps remind me of God’s faithfulness and how personal His love is.
God’s blessings to you and your beautiful family!

Hi Grammy Pammy,
. I love that you call him Bowie – so adorable.
what a sweet name. You should write this blog more often! I had heard about the fire on KLOVE radio.
So thankful everyone got out safely. You know, we are memorizing Psalm 121 in our Sunday school right now. And for some reason I have a hard time with the last part. But now I have a picture in my mind of everyone
walking safely out of the bus with the fire behind them
Good news about another baby boy. Sarah is like Supermom to me! I’ll keep praying.
And thanks again for the update. Hope the band can replace everything. And even more importantly I pray that Mark’s boys won’t have any nightmares.

thanks for the update! It’s so good to hear the Hammitt family is in God’s hands, but we knew they were! I often marvel when I realize what an impact this entire family, and the band has had on our lives. Especially myself and my children. My 19 year old son Jonathon was very priveleged to work their merch table at the ALIVE Festival last week, and he came home a different man. I know every time it impacts positive in my children’s lives!

It’s so wonderful to see Bowen doing so well!!! I’ve followed along from the beginning-he is close to my heart because I have a little girl with HLHS. She had two of the three surgeries then they decided to leave her alone and let her little amazing heart go as long as it would. A few weeks ago an echo showed decreased right ventricle function. Long story short-she’s being listed for a heart transplant in the next few days. I wanted to share b/c I know this is close to your hearts as well, and well, the more prayers going up the louder it is in Heaven!!!!

So happy to see that Bowen is doing so well and getting so big. His little sister is doing well in the growing area too. Congratulations on your new addition to the family. I am sure both big brother and big sister will enjoy having a new little brother in the family to love. God has done amazing work in your family, in Bowens life and in the success of your band. May He continue to bless your family and those who follow this blog.
P.S.
Grammy Pammy,
Don’t worry too much about Bowen’s eating habits. I have noticed in my experience with babies that NG tubed babies do have an aversion to food. (Even if he only had it for a month or two.) It usually only lasts for a little while and then he will catch up…and probably surpass other boys his age. Give him time and you will all be wondering where all the food in the house has gone.
God Bless

It’s always nice nice to hear from Matt and Sarah but it’s always GREAT to hear from you Grammy Pammy

I just want to get that in before I move on , as I see there are other posts.
What a wonderful testimony to God’s blessing and protection while the band’s on the road , especially when they’re joined by the families.I feel your relief at what could indeed have been a very different phone call. I guess the Lord still has plenty of writing deadlines for Matt to meet.
We’ve recently had our family vacation to the UK , visiting family and friends there. It’s always humbling to look back at all the miles you’ve driven , flown and see how God was there right along.
I’m amazed at your dare-devil antics , going down the high slide!! I wish I hadn’t read it , tho’ . I feel I have no excuse when Laura ( going on 3) asks Mimi to go! I’ll see you in my minds eye and feel courageous. Maybe……
Anyway , on July 5th Graeme had his 6mth MRI. All clear! He’s doing great! Typical teenager , I think. He’s growing so fast (he’s 15) that he gets out of bed , has breakfast and curls up on the sofa and sleeps again for a while………… What is school vacation for otherwise
We were at a couple of churches with family in Scotland and it was wonderful to meet people we didn’t know , who had prayed for Graeme , and for them to meet up with him and see him doing so well. Humbling too.
Well , dear friend , enjoy that brood you have there , also as you look forward to the new little one.
From a Mimi to a Grammy,
Isobel x

I sit here this morning, reading the story of Bowen, while my prayers are with my 2 1/2 year old grandson, who was also born having HLHS. Today, they are performing the Fontan procedure with some other corrections that couldn’t be done during his heart cath yesterday. Thank you for sharing your feelings, your love, your strength. I not only pray for the success of the surgeons through God’s guidance, but I pray for my daughter and son-in-law and their faith in God and in God’s will. Big sister (who is nearly 14) is also praying hard for her brother.
