Dear Bowen,

It’s Thursday, September 8th, the night before your first birthday. Last year, at this very moment, we were in a strange hospital with unfamiliar doctors, away from the comforts of home. We felt out of place and a bit unsettled by our surroundings the first night we were at Mott Children’s Hospital. However, there was something that seemed so perfectly settled within our hearts, something that overshadowed our discomfort. You were about to come into the world, into our arms, exactly the way that God made you.

Our hearts were ripe with anticipation, bursting with excitement to see the face of this baby boy that we had named Bowen. We were scared, but we were ready to love you, even if only for a moment.

If we could’ve seen then what we see now…your little teeth poking through your smile with ice cream on your face, having a chance to taste something other than pain in this world. We thank God for every moment of beautiful life we share with you.

Lord willing, you will grow older, and we pray that God will fill your heart with love and wisdom. However, there may be days you look at your scars in the mirror, nights you spend in a hospital room wondering why you were born with a broken heart. There may even be times that the pain of a broken heart will be far beyond any physical pain you could endure. If those times should come, your heart will burn to find resolution to the angst and conflict that rages within you. You will search for the treasure of true satisfaction, and we pray, quite simply, that your heart will be found in Jesus.

Happy first birthday Bowen!

We love you,

Mom and Dad

“Who would’ve thought that one broken heart could help make so many whole”

God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.”
